Live-in carers in Malta

Browse carers in Malta and Gozo for a live-in role with an older person. A live-in carer shares the home, keeps your parent company, helps with meals, personal routines and moving about safely, and is there at night. Each profile says whether the carer wants a live-in or live-out role, and lists experience, languages, skills and a start date.

Your family employs the carer directly. Malta's Domestic Service order sets the terms for live-in household workers, including a monthly minimum wage, meals on the days they sleep in, a weekly rest day and paid public holidays. Before the first day you need a PE number from the tax office, and you register the carer with Jobsplus on an engagement form.

If your parent is over 60, the Carer at Home scheme can help with the wage when the carer holds a recognised qualification. CarerMalta is an advertising platform, not an agency: you contact carers, interview them and agree terms yourselves, with no agency fees.

Common questions

How much is a live-in carer paid in Malta?

The wage is agreed between you and the carer, but it can't go below the legal minimum. For a live-in worker who sleeps in at least 17 nights a month, the 2026 minimum is €1,016.37 a month (L.N. 288 of 2025, checked 15 Sep 2026). On top come two bonuses of €135.10 (June and December) and two allowances of €121.16 (March and September) (DIER, checked 15 Sep 2026), and the employer's social security contribution. Our live-in carer pay and costs guide has the full table.

Can the Carer at Home scheme help pay for a live-in carer?

Yes, if your parent is over 60 and the carer holds a recognised qualification (MQRIC equivalence for qualifications from abroad). In 2026 the scheme pays up to €9,000 a year, monthly. You apply to AACC with a GP's medical report, a copy of the qualification and an employment agreement authenticated by a notary (servizz.gov.mt, checked 15 Sep 2026). See our Carer at Home guide.

What does a live-in carer get besides the wage?

On the days they sleep in, all meals and a minimum daily rest of three hours in total; one rest day a week, paid double if they work it; and the national and public holidays with full pay (S.L. 452.170, checked 15 Sep 2026). Employers may not deduct from the wage except where the law allows it, such as the order's €48.36 monthly meal deduction.

Can I employ a live-in carer from outside the EU?

Yes. A non-EU live-in carer needs an Identità single permit; the fee for a live-in carer is €27.50 (Identità, checked 20 Oct 2026), and elderly care roles don't need a Jobsplus or EURES vacancy advert first (Identità, checked 20 Oct 2026). CarerMalta doesn't take part in permit applications. Our non-EU carer guide explains the official steps.

Is a live-in carer better than a care home?

It depends on how much support your parent needs, how much space you have at home and what your family can cover on rest days and holidays. Our guide to live-in care, visiting care and care homes compares the options using official information.
